who would you want as your back up?

I was jumped on February 16th on my way home from school...because I intervened when this guy that pulled a knife on his pregnant girlfriend in class and threatened her because she didnt get an abortion.

Bear in mind, my school is in a low-income area...and there is a seperate "academy" on campus for teen parents. The gals often take classes with the mainstream students. Gangs are extremely common and shootings/stabbings are getting more and more common also.

Was walking home with my buddy, Will...considering I was still incapacitated by my knee injury, there wasn't much I could do...but Will...man, he showed some balls. Couldnt have asked for a better person there beside me. His actions backed my belief that a bit of martial arts training and a knife in your pocket can take care of pretty much anything.

No one was seriously hurt, although the sucker that tried to jump me went home pretty banged up. Was expelled from the school and later picked up on assault charges (unrelated).

wasn't really my "backup" considering I didnt actually get to throw any punches...haha.
But I guess if I had to choose a backup, it would have to be my grandmother. She can kick serious butt

Either one of my siblings or my dad. My brother is a black belt in Karate, my sister has more balls than you and all your male ancestors, and I'll share a little story with you about my dad.

My dad grew up in Berkeley. This is a rough area of California, refer to Durkee's post to get a general idea. This was back in the day though. Black guys beating up white kids for listening to James Brown. I think that sets the scene pretty well.

He was at Berkeley High School, and he saw three guys rush up to this girl, snatch her purse, and run off into a dead-end alley. He didn't even notice the girl, cute/old whatever. This kind of thing DOES NOT happen to ANYONE in his world.

He ran after them and confronted them in the alley as they were rifling through the purse and tossing things out. "You put all that back in there and bring it here!", he said. The biggest, ugliest one of them stepped forward as if to say "who's gonna make us?". This guy must have been 6'4" and 300 lbs. My dad was a lanky guy on the crew shell and water polo teams.

My dad turned away quickly as if he was going to run. The big guy lunged at him. My dad wasn't running, he just turned away to the right, braced his left hand on his right knee, and brought his right fist up with all the power he could muster. But he hadn't expected the guy to lunge. He hit this mofo square in the forehead and all this guy's forward momentum was suddenly and completely cut off by my dad's fist. The behemoth just stopped and dropped midair.

Meanwhile, as fist met forehead, my dad could hear his bones creaking from his fist to his shoulder. He knew he had to keep it together and not show any weakness. Despite the pain, he had to stand stoically.

The big guy started convulsing when he hit the ground. His nervous system was f***ing itself and didn't know what the heck had just happened. That punch must have rattled this dude's tiny brain inside that thick skull of his.

The other thieves just went pale when they saw goliath convulsing on the ground. They were horrified of what this skinny kid was going to do to them.

"Now you put that back in there and bring it to me." Nobody has ever done anything as urgently as they did when putting that girl's purse back together, gathering up all the ID, makeup, whatever else there was and shoving it back in there. They handed it to him and bolted. That girl got her purse back thanks to my dad.



I'm feeling in a story-telling mood, so I'll share another one with you. This one's shorter.

Berkeley High School, in a hallway after school. Somebody asked my dad what time it was. He wore a watch that was an imitation of a really nice, expensive watch. His parents were poor. He couldn't afford nice things. This was back when the stretchy metal bands were popular on watches.

There were clocks around. My dad knew what the game was. He was supposed to hold up his wrist and look down at his watch so the other guy could snatch it and run off. He held up his wrist, but he didn't look down. He watched the guy. He saw the guy focused on the watch, he watched the guy's hand move up to snatch it. The guy had no idea where my dad was looking, or what my dad was doing with his right fist.

Fist connected with face, and greedy hands never touched that cheap watch.

My dad doesn't fight. The word "fight" implies that there are multiple people participating. "Don't ever fight. If you fight, you'll get hurt. Don't fight; win."

Thats a good one.....but im just cinical enough to have my doubts. sorry

You're entitled to your doubts Mercc, this is the internet after all. But I assure you the stories are true even if story telling has "enhanced" the details. I tried to stay as true to his telling as possible. That's all I can do.

My friend Dj, he is a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, I'm only a first. normally this isn't very important to me, but I realized that he is the only one in my whole Tae Kwon Do class who I'm really afraid to fight. without padding on, he could probably hit with enough power to kill someone.

St pierre, is the worlds greatest welter weight (That's 170 pounds for middle-weight). He has lost only twice I believe, and has since beaten both men.

Strength doesn't matter, its quick reaction times in a fight.

Yeah....its doesnt matter how much you lift....all the (useless)muscles in the world aren't gonna stop a knife or bullet from a mugger.

Mhm since when does a middle weight relly on strengh? Besides...muscle or fat does help in a fight, more stuff to penatrate to organs, theres been some studies done that shows fat people have a higher survival rate in car accidents...sooo yay fat

Strength does matter. But luckily for me, my man pierre has strength, speed, good reactions and years of practice and skill. ^_^

well i'd take about anybody that i knew and trusted, but if it could be anybody (animal) it'd have to be my horse skip, (i know he's a horse but he's trusted cause he knows who feeds him) i know how hooves feel and wouldn't want to be on the recieving end.

I would choose my friend Nick he is black belts in multipul things, plus he teaches karate.

I hate to break it to you guys but most martial arts probably won't help you much in a street fight. On the street there are no rules and a lot of the moves are too complex to work effectively in a life and death situation with fear and adrenaline coursing though you causing slower reaction times and clouded judgement. Best idea really is to take a really good self defense course and learn some simple but effective moves. A few martial arts like Krav Maga for an example is an exception since it's not a sport based martial arts like Karate and Jujutsu has become.

You are correct, most "dojos" have become belt factories in order to make money, every few months they will promote you and you shell out some more money.

The only ones I know of that would be of use is Krav Maga (oltho it is becoming popular so it might end up as a belt factory) and Mauy Thai...mix in some grappling to those and your set.
