In their culture, men holding hands is a sign of friendship; not of homosexuality. If you refused to hold a man's hand, he would be vastly insulted. It would mean that you look down on him and find him unclean and unfit to be your friend. Not the best gesture if you're trying to establish a positive relationship with the local populace.
