Here are a few pics of my dad in afghanistan. On patrol more or less.

My dad is the one on the right in both pics with the unique plate carrier.

When were these taken?

They were take a week or 2 ago. My dad left to go there recently.

hehe he's a chaplain.

He does indeed go overseas a lot, He was there when we went into iraq in 2003. He carried a cross in his interceptor when they went in.

Something I've always wondered, do they recruit Jewish/Muslim/Hindu/Buddhist/etc ministers?

Cool stuff. I hear the DoD has standing orders telling service members to keep their rosaries, crosses, etc out of sight so they don't risk offending the locals.
Good move on their part. Last thing we want is them getting the impression we're on some christian holy war.

That there are...though most ministers/chaps take non-denominational stances so they can reach a wider audience. The larger FOBs and OF's have services for different denominations though. Buddhists and Hindi's aren't too common in the military...since it largely involves them denouncing core practices of the faith.

Though according to the DoD, there are currently 3000+ Buddhists serving.
In 2008 there were 26 cadets at the US Air Force Academy who practice Buddhism.

I live right next to MCRD (marine corps recruit depot) i have seen tons of budhists there (in the buddhist chapel)

and you are correct durkee, he doesn't necessarily serve just his religion. He is as much of a counselor as he is a priest.

It's not really bringing faith to the fighters. Its more like helping fighters deal with everyday anxiety. PTSD and the sort. In fact my dad is suffering from it himself....

He is not trying to turn people into Christians, he isn't a crusader, he doesn't say people will go to \"Watch your language\" if they don't convert... He's not that kind of person.

all the chubby bunny faces are probably from the tight helmet straps.

Christ almighty, our armor keeps getting smaller and smaller. Look at the guy on the left in the last picture, can't imagine that providing much protection!

Durkee: looks to be the SPC, fits normal sized plates. Same sized plates as the big vests...

That's horrible! It covers like...1/3 of his chest. I wouldn't feel safe.

That's what I would guess too from the scissors and front medical(?) pouch.

Personally I think knowing you don't have a lot of protection would make me try harder not to get shot.

the first pic of him was with a corpsman i believe, also they are inside an osprey if you were wondering.

He looks like a pretty small fellow, so i believe that SPC is just fine, it covers all the vital areas, besides they are trained to fire with should straight (so that the SAPI plates are more effective) instead of sideways.
