Why are people so afraid of the poor? I'd like to see anyone try to be homeless for a week and see just how terrible most people treat them.

Think about the next two dollars you're going to spend. Ask yourself if you really need that donut or soda or coffee and think about how you could make someone's day, lessen their crushing depression at least for a few minutes.

I don't know, but it seems to me that you haven't encountered some of the Homeless out there. (Some) They are literally CRAZY, and I wouldn't want to walk past them with my child. I don't think they should do this, and I also don't think they should just give these people a hand out. (Create wellfare state vs create working state)
Why not apply the Biblical principal of "gleanings?" It's an amazing system, that encourages the poor to work!

How many of them got to where they are because of alcohol and/or drug problems or because they are lazy and don't actually want a job? Or, and this is even better how many of them are fakers?

I'm sorry but homeless people don't factor into my life in anyway. In my opinion a lot of them are there because they want to or they've ruined their own lives. Kinda hard to feel compassion for them.

Durkee the crazy ones are crazy because they've addled their minds with loneliness, boredom, hunger, and regret. When you're by yourself in such a harsh society, you become forced to start thinking about things, for them it's how or why they are where they are. If you think about that for as long as you're on the streets, you WILL go crazy. Sure, they probably made some bad choices that led to homelessness but that doesn't mean they don't need help. They can hardly ever get jobs because the same type of people from the article reject them as soon as the jingle bell on the door rings. I've seen it firsthand.

I will agree that many of them wanted to be homeless, but that doesn't mean they enjoy it. They must've had crappy lives before that and living on the streets was the easiest and quickest escape.

Spending $50,000 in order to deconstruct benches so they can have a shittier life is one of the dumbest things I've heard.

It's not that they chose to be homeless, it's that they chose to live on the streets in that particular area and beg their way back into society. I don't think anyone wakes up one morning and says "Man this house sucks. I'm gunna burn my money and be homeless". True the majority are in their current situation because of drug abuse and fell into their predicament due to that...but especially in these times, people are on the street because they've literally lost everything. Rather than creating a welfare state, we need to create a way for them to feel their way out of extreme poverty. Something like the Civil Conservation Corps, but with a larger age range and maybe more administrative jobs than physical labor for the older folks. It should be about giving them options and could provide job experience and basic training so they are more capable of entering the general market on their own, not forcing welfare or pity on them.

Too true. Just idiotic. If you really have a problem with the homeless in your city, do something to fix the core problem. The homeless are still going to be there even if there aren't benches.

This is messed up. Does it matter where the benches are? No there will still be less than affluent members of society, this is just wrong.

If i were homeless, id constsntly lay where the benches were removed frpm just to hack people off and prove that theyre mindlessley throwing away $$$.

If I were homeless, I would get a job. It's easier than it looks. I, a 16 year old kid, got a job on my first try with no problems. Illegal immigrants can get jobs easily enough. If they can get a job, a homeless man with probably some work experience, who is most likely a citizen of our country, could get one just as easily, if not more easily than the immigrants... As long as they take a shower/go for a swim first.

My brother has been looking for a job for a year + and sending in applications quite often and he doesn't have a job yet. Sometimes you will get a job quickly, others not.

If you could get a job easily there wouldn't be as many homeless people and our unemployment rate wouldn't be stuck in the orbital level. No, if people could settle for a low paying job, and earn their money, rather than stand on the side of the road, even though it pays better, THEN we would have less homeless people. Honestly guys, I have had homeless people come live with me for a while a few times, I have talked to so many of them that I know them by name now, and I have had a lot of them tell me that they are just out there because it pays better than a job that they could get easily.

Sno hit the nail on the head. I read an article a few months back in the local paper about the average income in the local area. It summed up to around 22,000 through begging... Thats more than most people at mcy d's will make in a year working full time. its the same reason people deal, its easy money. Why would they work hard if they can stay alive with a cash flow for free?

Also it should be noted that allot of guys/girls are mentally handicapped pre and post homelessness. The other majority are addicted to some form of abusive drug or alcohol... The minority that I've met with a good sales pitch find work or a work program eventually. Not saying that its easy, especially with this economy. However if you want it you're going to get it, no matter what. If you want to beg for 22,000 a year then you could do that as well....

Yes aggreed there are those with mental illnesses, there are those that are not on the streets through design, there are those that have hit on hard times, a vast majority are there because they want to be there. No responsibilities, No material worries, No accountability, A government assistance program that not only assists them, makes it easier, but also supports and promotes a continued way of life.

What could be easier than complaining of/demonstrating an illness/handicap that prevents then from working, having some third rate saw bones that receives kick backs, declaring it so, showing up for your government cash twice a month. Abundent shelters, Soup Kitchens, Half Way Houses, Government Sponsored Housing, all bills paid, no taxes, and all this before we go into all the other added benifits that are open to them.

As far as Santa Barbara doing what they did, Good For Them !! My hats off to the City Council, one way to reduce the open plague of the homeless, beggers, mentaly ill, it´s not the cities fault that the weather is conducive to the homeless way of life, but it also dosn´t mean they have to support it.

Due to reasons I won't even try to explain (don't ask either), my own father was near-homeless for a larger portion of 2009, mostly in Santa Barbara living and storing his stuff in his '94 Suburban, sometimes staying at the apartment of a relative. He is mostly out of that hole now; still unemployed. He has talked to me about it during some of the mildly rare occasions I meet up with him but we try to put it behind us. If you're going to say all that stuff about people whom you are probably too prejudiced to talk to and assume every case is the same, then I don't know what to say to you.

I remember I tried to give a homeless man some money, but my mom stopped me and told me "he's only going to buy beer or cigarettes with what you give him."

she was right, all of the homeless fellows that i have seen are smoking cigarettes. If they were so poor and suffering so much then wouldn't they cut out cigarettes or alcohol or anything else? Which leads me to my belief that almost all homeless people are fake, and taking the money from the real homeless who could really use it.

I agree with what was said about it being easier for a homeless person to get a job than an illegal immigrant. It might not necessarily be a high paying job, or a mcdonalds job, but the jobs are out there. If half of the illegals in california and the rest of the U.S. can do it, so can the homeless. (plus i bet most of the homeless speak english... unlike our illegal friends.)
