| i have been told that, real-steel or otherwise, it is bad for the weapon to be cleaned too many times. i don't know if this is true, seeing as the USMC teaches Marines to clean their rifles multiple times a day. somebody, please show me the light! | |

| what do you mean by clean? you don't need to clean the body so you don't do anything anyways.real steel guns are better then plastic. if you buy and clean a plastic gun it will wear down over time faster then a metal and metal looks feels and performs better usually.just be careful what type of metal it is(zinc is soft and will dent easy) | |

| airsoft doesn't involve any powder so no GSR build up. If anything you only need to clean the barrel ONCE a month or week (if you play that often). | |

| I clean my gun very often I live by the motto "a clean gun is a working gun" and I can''t tell you how true that is. I clean out my barrel after every skirmish or war to keep my gun from getting jams. I clean the magwell and the gearbox. Sometimes if I haven''t played in a while and my guns been sitting around i'll clean it out a little bit just to make sure its still in good shape. | |

| @Metallic: I mean cleaning internal parts, i.e. the barrel, gearbox, hop-up, so on. @STORM: good motto! @LW: that would make sense, but wouldn't there be environmental factors, as well? by environmental, i mean where the weapon is stored. | |

Yes there are environmental factors, however stainless barrels really don't corrode. I live in a moist area and play about once a month. However I store my gun in a dry closet away from all electrical and plumbing so there is really nothing going on in storage. However I also clean it every 5000 rds so during a day I usually don't go through that many rds. For the gearbox. I relube and check the shims every other month, about as often as someone would change the oil in their car (6 months) @STORM Good motto if your talking about a AR or american rifle in general...A AK i can pull out of a bog thats been there for 10 years. charge it and fire. | |

| well there is such thing as TOO MUCH SILICONE in the barrel. I heard it affects the bbs travel, but not sure how. | |

| it makes waves in the barrel when it dries and causes the bb to spin or compress in odd ways. You can shoot enough and the waves will come out | |

| yea it can, barrels are not meant to be soaking wet with silicone, only cleaned with it. All the silicone does is add a thin layer of even lubrication. Too much oil can cause the narrow airpocket produced by the sphere shape of the bb that forms around the bb to fail and the bb rubs against the sides of the barrel making your shot inaccurate. | |

| yeah there we go doesn't it also make the bb slow down because of the silicone on it? | |

| For go to add you can also use a cleaning rod @Mike It can because the bbs rub the sides of the barrel and that causes friction which causes speed reduction. | |

| IT is also VERY important to clean with the correct type of liquid. I used to (in the nOOb days) clean my replicas with REAL STEEL gun oil, which was a mistake. It eats away at the hop-up bucking and grimes up the barrel....and it's just all-around bad news. Don't use it. Use NOTHING but silicone!! | |

| Just clean the barrel don't lubricate it. Again you never really lubricate a barrel, you just clean. You do however lubricate a gearbox with white lithium gel/grease. | |
