I'm in the process of applying to JFK Middle College for the next school year and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the middle college system?
I'd be attending JFK and Norco College...and I've been told that at my current rate I could, theoretically, get an AA degree before I even graduate from high school.

I'm currently in the 10th grade and will turn 16 this July.
Current classes (classes I'm getting full credits for this year):
-Senior Algebra (in-school)
-Senior Business Math (online)
-Senior English (in-school)
-Senior Chemistry (online)
-Senior Photography (in-school, elective)
-Physical Science (in-school
-Modern World History (online)
-American History (online)
-Graphic Design (in-school, elective)
-Publications (in-school, elective)

+PE (hockey, partial [only getting 2 out of 5 credits])

What I'm wondering is:
-What are the military's views on middle colleges (will it effect my applications to a senior military college?)
-Your opinions/experiences with middle colleges.
-I still need a few credits for PE...what physical education classes would you recommend? (ie: yoga, weight training, etc...)

I'd be taking only academic classes at JFK...and electives + additional academic classes at Norco College.

My school day would be from about 7:30am to 6:00pm...

The one reason I wouldnt attend JFK is because of the distance.
Bus/train routes I've found will take about 2 1/2 hours one-way.
I might speed up and get my license, but I still probably wouldnt drive it every day because its a 45 minute haul.

If your school has JROTC, take it. It counts as a full physical education credit. Or, at least it does at my school. It would look really good on an application to a senior military college, too.

Naw JFK doesnt have JROTC and Norco only has ROTC. So idunno.

I'm trying to get them to count CAP or hockey as PE (like my current school does), but I don't think I'm gunna have any luck.
I only really need like 3 credits...so not even a full semester's worth...

TBH, JROTC is mostly a joke, you learn some usefull thing but mostly it's a bunch of kiddies playing drill sargeant...For your PE creds..most colleges have several bad a options for it, for example here at NG we have fencing, climbing, canoeing, kayaking, martial arts, fishing, various contact sports...the list goes on and on.

Im not familiar with the middle college system...however it sounds like it for more advanced students?..sort of like the Advanced Acadamy here in Georgia?

if it is (and you don't becoume a lazy sob like I did) it would look extremly good, you should even consider applying for West point if your SAT's, ACT's are high enough (granted you would need a "Watch your language" good GPA as well)

So look into West Point..see what thier requirments are..they have a pretty long application process so make sure your on the ball if your considering it.

Ooooh...fencing...I fenced for like a month...was fun...I shall see what they have. I'm ordering a course catalog so I'll see what my options are. Norco is right next to the Naval Surface Warfare Center...which is basically a little tiny lake...so there might be water sports...I shall see.

Ya definitely for the "advanced". Kids that are ahead of credits and find the "normal" high school system to be little challenge.

GPA is 3.7 and if I keep it up, I'll likely have it up to at least 4.0 by the end of the month.
Never would've seen myself as West Point worthy...but I'm sure its worth applying to...even if it is just to be able to say "Ya kids, I applied to West Point." Razz

I'll get back to you guys once I hear a bit more about the program. But heres some of the things that stood out to me:
-Attend academic classes at JFK from 7:40am - 2:50pm ...then go to Norco College for all electives and other academics.
-Flexible scheduling
-Block schedule
-Alot of tech-based learning
-Open campus (Perfectly fine with chewing gun, hats, etc...can leave campus for lunch)
-The teachers seem really cool (They teach more like a college professor than anything...)
-College setting (Were on the campus and share classes with college kids.)
-Double dipping (Can use college classes for high school and college credits)
-Small class sizes (Theres 700 kids at the school...avrg class size is about 25)

Yeah they should have sailing there as well..be epic for PT

Yeah I had a 4.0 till my junior year..not gonna go into that..but you need to take a look at the West point page it's a pretty lenghty application process and you need to get nominations from the president/senators..sooo extracuricular activities ect are needed..

thier page explains it all soo good luck with w/e :p

The best millatary colleges in the USA at moment is West Point and North Georgia (NG is the ROTc unit in the us atm)

First, an M4 is a rifle, not a gun.

I've never heard of "middle college" before, but it sound similar in principle to the running start program here. In my junior and senior years of high school, I've taken all my classes at the local community college, earning both high school and college credit. This spring I'm hoping to earn both my high school diploma and a 2-year transfer degree from the college. The only downside is that only in-state schools will acknowledge my degree.

The major upsides of this program are that the state pays tuition and you can get an extra 2 years of school out of the way in the time it takes most people just to graduate high school.

If that is anything like this, I say go for it!

While an M4 is a rifle by definition, it is also a "gun" by definition.

Gun- A tool consisting of a tube from which a projectile is fired at high velocity into a nearly flat trajectory.

If were going to get technical...a handgun, artillery piece, or any other projectile-firing system with a grooved barrel is considered a rifle by definition Smile

Alright! Back to business...

Sending in my application to JFK-MC-HS tomorrow along with an application to the International Polytechnic High School (On Cal-Poly's campus).

I'm not expecting to go to I-Poly (Nor do I really want to go there...) so I'm really going to set my sights on JFK. Just need to figure out the logistics of getting to and from school.

I need some insight...
-For a new driver, would you consider a 30+ minute drive to and from school every morning in heavy California traffic doable?
-Do any of you take buses/trains/public-transit to or from school?
-How long is your haul to school?
-What are some good, no-frills laptops?

See, Full Metal Jacket really is a learning program! (just kidding, sort of)

Try Compaq or Acer, Durkee. They make fairly cheap laptops, if I remember correctly.

-How long is your haul to school? 2 hours
-What are some good, no-frills laptops? Look into the netbooks..small, no nonsense..and kick ass battrery life ( min \e has 11 hours)

Congrats!
I was recently accepted into the UW school of engineering as a junior. With hard work, dedication, and a little luck, you should expect similar results in a couple years. Success is sweet.
