Im thinking of starting shifting to semi-vegetarian diet...like non-meat supplemented with small ammounts of fish and non-red meats (like people have been doing for all of history until a few hundred years ago Very Happy ). I'm just kinda sick that our society ingrains the "MEAT MEAT MEAT! FAT FAT FAT! SUGAR SUGAR SUGAR! GRRRRR!" mentality...

Trying to find a balance between the extremes of vegetarianism and the carnivorous frenzy that is the the modern American diet.
So approximately 90-95% plant/vegetable matter supplemented by 5-10% non-red meat. (No dairy or refined sugar FTW!)

Anyone have resources that I can hit up to get meal plans and recipes?

Well this choice was actually spawned by, who woulda thought, a Cultural Anthropology class I'm taking in college. As it turns out, biologically speaking, your body needs absolutely no red meat or refined sugar. Hunter-gatherer societies lived off of 90% foraged vegetable matter for thousands of years...and, from an scientific standpoint, those types of societies were the healthiest. Think about the amount of energy these roaming hunter-gatherer peoples needed compared to the energy requirements of the average American who gets a maximum of 45 minutes of exercise a day on average.

In all reality, modern society is addicted to sugar...it is a drug and is responsible for more deaths than alcohol, illicit drugs, and car accidents combined...and that's the main point of my assumed diet: cutting refined sugar intake to 0. I want to live how we were biologically meant to live...not how the "food" industry conditions us to live.

I love a steak just as much as the next guy...but I'd rather go without it and have a substantially healthier existence as a result.

Meh. Let's see how long you last. Although veggies do give us more energy because each level of consumer only transmits 10% of its energy to the next level consumer. So it's like this:

Plants (Producers): 1000kcal
Primary Consumer: 100kcal
Secondary Consumer: 10kcal
Tertiary Consumer: 1kcal
Quaternary Consumer: .1kcal

So this explains why meat is a luxury to humans. It can go 100 ears of corn --> 10 Cows --> 1 human OR 100 ears of corn --> 10 humans.

Yes, the energy pyramid is one of the major points that people refer me to when I ask about it...but the primary reasoning was this:
It's a fact. Modern farm animals are deliberately fattened up to increase profits. Eating fatty meat increases your chances of having a heart attack or developing cancer.

Not to mention all the other reasons...like how the manufacture animals for consumption en masse (ya sorry...those cow farms...they're factories) leads to massive amounts of methane being thrown up into our lovely atmosphere and is a greater cause of global warming than carbon fuels.

I'm not one of those "aminals have rights too" d-bags...my reasoning is entirely selfish Very Happy

Good luck! It's a healthy choice, just make sure you still eat lots of protein or you'll lose muscle mass and you won't be as healthy as someone who eats red meat and exercises.

PETA's website could probably help you start out...granted they are in the extreme but i would give you an idea on how to maintain protein and all that.

Also dropping meat is a bit extreme...hunter gatherers have been depending on meat for thousands of years and they were pretty healthy.

In my opinion you should instead be focusing on dropping the sugar, and also looking and getting food free of hormones and other weird stuff. Same with your veggies....helps little you turn vegetarian and then you eat food laced with lord knows what.

Ah and the hardest will be the first few weeks...our bodies literally form addictions to sugar that are very hard to break (very easy energy source for the body)

Anyways...good luck with this and stick to it..will make you feel much better.

Ya PETA was the first place I went to...but they seemed to be trying too hard to indoctrinate me into some eco-terrorism cult haha.
Im weening myself on to it, so there is a 2 week period where I will gradually eat less and less meat/sugar...that way I don't have to deal with the withdrawal as much.

Not ice cream...just McDonald's Chicken Nuggests before they are molded into shape:
VEGGIES! Chickengoop
Because it's crawling with bacteria, it will be washed with ammonia, soaked in it, actually. Then, because it tastes gross, it will be reflavored artificially. Then, because it is weirdly pink, it will be dyed with artificial color.

I was so disappointed in you until I read "Im not one of those 'Animals have rights too!' D bags." then I was actually kinda proud.

But yeah, as Zane said, the first few weeks will be \"Watch your language\". Stick to it. Good luck, durkee.

Im not going to lie..that machine was pretty beastly.

This article has some good food plans in them that drop red meat out...and they are actually healthy

http://www.military.com/military-fitness/weight-loss/need-to-lose-40-lbs

Granted you will probably be eating more since you don't want to loose..but that meal plan he gives is very well balanced.

you could also try milling your own flower to make bread. it's much better for you even than the whole grain stuff at the stores (f.y.i., to say "whole wheat" on their package, bread companies only have to have 50% or more wheat in the bread) and it tastes delicious. you can buy a grain mill that will fit on your kitchen counter. just a thought.

Oh and don't believe all the "100% organic!" bullshit. All food is organic unless you're eating rocks and minerals.

I do have to agree with that...have you ever tried growing a tomato yourself? They look nothing like the store bought "organic" ones.

Durkee the reason it is like that is that all organic tomatoes usually have to be grown in a hothouse (green house) because the worms that eat tomatoes are almost impossible to control with none chemical means. And since their kept in a hothouse they are at the best possible growing temperature meaning they grow big. (Granted this also depends on the type of crop, and some hybrids can get pretty big)

As for the organic thing? arsenic and cyanide are also organic...you don't see me eating those do you? All organic means is that they don't spray that on your food...or your chickan doesn't get washed with bleach, and takes more then a week to grow mature. Same with your cows.

Sure, but that isn't the real meaning of "organic".

Actually it is one of the meanings of organic

merriam-webster
Quote :
(2) : of, relating to, yielding, or involving the use of food produced with the use of feed or fertilizer of plant or animal origin without employment of chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics, or pesticides <organic farming> <organic produce>

Many high school chemistry teachers seem to think it makes them sound smart when they say everything is organic...yeah it is but guess what? Many words have more then one meaning...in fact organic has 5 different meanings.

Quote :
archaic : instrumental
2
a : of, relating to, or arising in a bodily organ b : affecting the structure of the organism
3
a (1) : of, relating to, or derived from living organisms <organic evolution> (2) : of, relating to, yielding, or involving the use of food produced with the use of feed or fertilizer of plant or animal origin without employment of chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics, or pesticides <organic farming> <organic produce> b (1) : of, relating to, or containing carbon compounds (2) : relating to, being, or dealt with by a branch of chemistry concerned with the carbon compounds of living beings and most other carbon compounds
4
a : forming an integral element of a whole : fundamental <incidental music rather than organic parts of the action — Francis Fergusson> b : having systematic coordination of parts : organized <an organic whole> c : having the characteristics of an organism : developing in the manner of a living plant or animal <society is organic>
5
: of, relating to, or constituting the law by which a government or organization exists
