Subject: Lets talk knives! Thu Feb 17, 2011 7:51 pm
1. Do you carry? 2. What do you carry? 3. Does your primary carry blade contradict local/state laws? 4. What was the "best" knife you've owned? 5. What are your thoughts on knives as basic self-defense tools?
Secondary question: Are there any exceptions to the no spring-assisted knife restrictions in California? Are out-the-top blades legal? What if they are not entirely automatic?

1.) yes 2.) RFB81 X-42 Recondo 3.) Arkansas law states that one can carry a knife unless "its intent is to be used as a weapon". I use mine as a defensive weapon, but only because you can't exactly prove someones intent. 4.) Well my favorite is my KA-BAR USMC variant, but I don't carry that. 5.) I believe that as long as you are responsible and you are solely using it for self-defense, then its fine. Its not as dangerous as carrying a gun, but more effective than pepper spray. ------- As far as I know, automatic blades are allowed if it is under two inches (in Cali), but don't quote me on that.

1. Sometimes 2. M-Tech Xtreme 3" frame lock, 440C steel 3. It is legal as far as I know or care. 4. N/A 5. The plain fact that a person is carrying a knife is about as far as it will help in self defense IMO. Most carry knives are not designed for much other than utility. If you attempt to stab a fleshy entity you are more than likely going to injure your fingers/hand if your blade hits bone. For a gut stab, I can see it being effective.
Completely automatic blades are illegal unless the blade is under 2" in length. Otherwise, any knife that does not "open with one hand utilizing thumb pressure applied solely to the blade of the knife or a thumb stud attached to the blade, provided that the knife has a detent or other mechanism that provides resistance that must be overcome in opening the blade, or that biases the blade back toward its closed position" is illegal. In short, it must have a "bias toward closure" and require pressure applied by the user to extend/open the blade. So unless your auto is under 2", it is a misdemeanor.
Website one and two can be used to help define restrictions more clearly.

Oh so this would be legal because the opening mechanism is directly attached to the blade and it requires manual action followed by spring assist? According to most people I've talked to, it's legal in California. http://www.bladeops.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=SWOTF2DB

1. Do you carry? Yeppers 2. What do you carry? I always carry my Jim Wagner RBB (made by Boker) and i also carry a small SOG Flash-1 spring assisted knife as well. 3. Does your primary carry blade contradict local/state laws? Nope 4. What was the "best" knife you've owned? The Boker 5. What are your thoughts on knives as basic self-defense tools? If you know at least somewhat on how to use it go for it, if not don't. If you have no idea how to fight with a knife you can easily end up being your own enemy. Plus it also depends on the situation, if you pull a knife on someone who is attacking you and who does not have a knife or similar weapon already drawn, you could loose your self defense privileges since you can not be the one to escalate the altercation.

Very good point. Which is why i carry the Boker, it's designed for fighting with a knife and sense i haven't bought a handgun yet it's my PDW.
