I have to do a 10 page term paper for my 11th grade lit class
the subject has to be related to one of the settings of the novel "the red badge of courage"

Now my mom was confronted by teacher and the teacher didn't really like my Idea of only focusing on camp life. 1 she should of came to me im kind of annoyed

This is how she told my mom how I have to do this and tell me if this is not the most random list of topics you ever had to include in a paper

I. Hierarchy
A. North - South Command
II. Life of Soldiers
III. Camp Life
IV. Daily Tasks
VI. Responsibility in War

Thesis being: "The Northern Soldiers had a much better chance to survive the hardships of the civil war vs. the much less prepared confederates"
The problem with that thesis is any average US history student knows that was completely vice versa because the south fought on home turf.
Another problem is the randomness of the topics. Topic II should involve the responsibilities of war as a sub category. Hierarchy should be completely removed. and there you have a logical paper. except the thesis needs to be changed with something vice versa.

Lone Wolf you appear to be making a lot of spelling mistakes like the topic says "I has QWESTION!!! and then some more inside of the paragraph. I haven't read "The Red Badge of Courage" yet but I'll probably read it soon in my lifetime.

Actually you are quite wrong. (Red badge of courage is civil war right?) The south had it easier during the first part of the war. Not only did they have the significantly better generals, which was a major factor in their early victories, but they had home turf. But once Lee Marched into northern territory, he started getting bigger troubles.

For one, he couldn't get his men proper supplies and ammunition, considering most confederate soldiers didn't even have shoes. Although Lee was a good general, he made a few bad mistakes while invading the north. Because of him Jackson tried to push past what he was capable of in a day, which lead to the mistake that got him killed. Lee also didn't listen to Stuart when he said there was no way they could break the center at gettysburg. The problem being the south didn't have enough cannon ammunition to adequately bombard the northern center. Close to 15,000 confederate soldiers were lost attempting to take that field, too much for victory at gettysburg, which Lee himself said was a mistake to fight at.

Of course, there are other factors than just that. Chamberlain made several brilliant moves through the civil war, and won a major victory at one of the union flanks at gettysburg, and then helped to defend the center during Stuarts charge.

Although even after gettysburg the civil war lasted another 2 years.

In a way the northern soldiers did have a better chance, because they did have more adequate supplies. But had the confederacy made one change before they originally attacked fort sumpter, they would have won.

This is a major issue I am having with the online sources even most of the books I checked out. Im not able to get any detailed information on the 'tediums' of the civil war camp life. Such as what did the indoctrinated drills entail for the veterans and the green horns? What kind of tents did both sides employ? What kind of food was prepared/ how was it prepared? (Recipes would be amazing!)

Well, most soldiers had salted meat. The heavy salt makes it last a long time, and to prepare it you would have to boil it in water to remove the salt. Failure to do this would result in diarrhea, the resulting response of that would be a doctor giving said soldier a salt tablet, which causes greater diarrhea. More soldiers died of that, than actual fighting.

For drills, chamberlain had to drill his men on how to break from marching lines into battle formations. He did this all day for weeks so that they would do this maneuver during combat.

Get a blanket, two sticks and a string. . . then you have the makings of your own crappy tent lol. I don't know what types of tents they had actually.

Here is something to help you understand a soldiers life.

Image if you will, you are part of the confederate army, despite what you see in movies, you uniform doesn't even match with most of the other soldiers, you have on only what your wife or mother made for you before leaving.
It is snowing, winter, and you are barefoot. It should be painful but you feet have long since gone numb, blissful, painless numbness. You are hungry, and have had bad diarrhea for a few days. You might even die of ammonia and the last battle your best friend had taken a bullet through the arm, they removed the bullet, had to amputate the arm, and you friend was going to make a full recovery until he caught ammonia and died. Your younger brother who was also a soldier took a cannon ball to the head, and he too is gone. Your older brother is fighting for the Union, and you might have even be shooting at him the last battle. Your are hungry, but dedicated to the cause, because you are not fighting to keep slavery. You are fighting for your rights, in this war, the second revolution.



I hope that creates an adequate image of civil war life.

As far as links go I do not. Most of my information was taken from books, and the history channel. But I am sure I can find a few links that talk about the civil war, although maybe not the red badge of courage itself.

Anything that has a .gov or .edu on it will be a good source of information though. You don't want a regular .com.

The south did have it better until the money ran out and then like many other countries torn by war , they started to increase taxes , and draft more men just to replace the ones dying because of stupid missions , lead by under qulified leaders , due to qualified leaders dying due to lack of health technology . Like Rome , the Conferacy fell from with in , and the North just helped . The Union won because of certain events beyound the normal one man's control , famine , and other things . Little do many know is that due to cotton trades in the south and high taxes in the north , England and the Confederacy were in good together . If not for the events at Antienam , England would have enventually sent troops over the jhelp the south along with money , and much needed food . Theoretically , the south would have won if not for Antienam . I have started reading the Red Badge Of Courage many years ago but not finished it yet , due to losing the book , lol . yeah I'm 90% sure your teacher cannot tell you what to wright in a paper... Unless its a class novel and not a personal novel.


If you want to read a quick book that semi correctly portrays the civil war read "he Journal of James Edmond Pease" Its not entirely accurate but it gives a good perspective. Its one of those My Name Is America book so its a little dumbed down, the author is Jim Murphy.

I don't really know a whole lot about the civil war so I can't help you out much; sorry...

That is a good book , I read it about a year or two ago and it was really , really good .

The English would never have sent troops. They would not support the south because they endorsed slavery, and for as long as the south continued with slavery, the English would have remained out of the war.

That is why they said they should have freed the slaves before attacking fort sumpter.

Actually had the south sent over enough goodies and supplies , before the war , then I think that slavery would not have been as much of a big issue . Also if Egypt had not have started to send cotton to England cheaper than what the Conferates were sending it over for , due to shipping over seas , and past the Union barracades , then England would have helped out more than they did . England already had ship makers making ships , and subs for the CSA , and most of the weapons in the Conferderate armory were England Made , why some even still had the Crown emblem on them . England liked the south , but I think they saw helping the south a liabitility more than them having slavery , because if they stayed out of it , both the CSA and the Union would somewhat love them , but if they helped the Union would hate them and the CSA would love them , if they won . If they help the Conferacy and they lost , then they would be in bad with the Union and still not have any cotton . So that amoung other things would be why England didn't help . Sorry that was so long but I love history especailly the civil war .

Hooray for doing stuff at the last minute , as a matter of fact I am going to do a model of a Berilliyum atom for science class Monday and turn it in on Tuesday , the day its due . My brother usually did his science project the day before it was due and did what took three months to do in three hours and made up all of the statistics and stuff . Before he graduated that is .

I don't know which is worse. writing or science/math
