Video camera

So, I decided to finally get a little serious about my film-making hobby, and actually buy a camcorder. Up till now, I've made do with using the video function on cameras, but it really isn't up to snuff. Does anyone have any experience with digital video cameras? I want something that shoots HD, but not a little pocket one like the flip. I've used those, and they just don't do it for me. If anyone could give me any advice, that'd be awesome.

Oh, and the price range is kinda low, maybe $200-$300. And $300 is the max.
