@Mike,
Boneyards are a good place to start, M-4/M16/AR15´s are like grains of sand on the Beach, they are just everywhere and more than enough to choose from, but depending on the Maker some of them can be an absolute Bear to breakdown and put back together, the first that comes to mind is the SRC models.
The gun that is probably the easiest to breakdown, regardless of manufacturer is a G3, 2 Pins, 2-6 Screws, and out comes the GB, as far as externals go for the G3, not as many as for the M4 but still an impressive amount.
A few tips, if you don´t mind,
Avoid any Gun with both Left/Right Fire selection, they are either set with a connecting Pin, or with opposing gears on the selector lever, either way getting the timing right during assembly, can cause alot of frustration.
Avoid Blow Back AEG´s, the blow back system on most guns are fragile, and complicated, gather some experience first, then attack a Blow Back.
In the beginning, write down everything that you try or do, after a while you will need to go back to your notes to double check what you did and the results.
Invest in some good work tools, Magnetic Screwdrivers, Precision Screwdrivers, Soldering Iron,
Micrometer, buy a quality Chronny, a poor mans Chronny just dosn´t cut it, Document your results, what went good what went wrong, don´t get frustrated when something dosn´t work the first time, when it donsn´t work find the reason why before you try something new, learn the terminology,
Torque, High Torque, Max Tourque, Vented, Ported, Polished, Oil Channel, Oil less, Gear Ratio´s, Mah, Ohm, Capacity, Active Breaking, Programmed Mosfett, `` X´´ Cut, MPS, FPS,% , Linear, Non Linear, Crown, Bridge, Cut-out, Cut-Off, Bearing(s), and on and on and on ....
Learn the differences and the applications for all the different internals, Bearing Piston Head, Bearing Spring Guide, Tooth Modification, Piston Modification, Piston Head Modification, Inner Barrel Tuning, Swiss Cheesing, Short Stroking, Spring Cutting, Bore Up, Buffering, and same as above, on and on and on ......
Be prepared to spend lots of time on the workbench and later when you get good at it, twice as much time, people will be coming and asking for help, and in the spirit of AS, No is not an option.
Good Luck, you are entering the Abyss,
, Turn back now before it is to late!! your AS soul will be chained for eternity to the Workbench
