Some are quite easy, others are going to require some overtime on the Gray Matter between the ears, let´s see how well everybody does. Good Luck First for the Marine lovers, Disregarding the color and attention to detail, 1. What is the main difference between the Enlisted and Officers, Dress white Marine Corp Hat Badge, and according to Marine corp legend, Why ( Talking about the nice shiny one, not the flat black)On the Officers Hat Badge Insignia, the Island of Cuba is missing on the Globe, the reason being acording to Marine Corps legend is, No Marine Corps Officer has Died on the Island.2. Capt. Charles B DeBellevue is credited with six aerial victories during the Vietnam conflict, making him the number one United States Air Force scoring person. Yet there is something unusual about the then Captain DeBelleyue and his victories that make them…well Odd. What makes his victories odd? 3. This is a 5 part-er for the Navy fans, a. Boats ? ( sticks )They were called Q-boats. What they would do was take an ordinary vessel, place hidden guns, torpedo tubes and the like on it, and patrol the sea lanes. Since one of the tactics of the U-boats was to surface and finish off a non-combatant type vessel was with a deck gun (after they gave the crew a chance to get off the ship), the q-ship would wait till the sub was on the surface and vulnerable, then sink it with the hidden deck guns. | @slob the answers to #4: a. Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, then Territory of the United States of America b. December 7th, 1941 c. Empire of Japan, led by (if i am not mistaken) Emperor Hirohito d. not sure if you are talking munitions types or delivery means. so, to be vague, I. Munitions: torpedoes and bombs, maybe machine guns on smaller ships. II. Delivery Means: 414 aircraft, ranging from dive bombers, to fighters, to torpedo planes. also used were 5 midget submarines. e. the Japanese attack on the Hawaiian Islands was meant to protect campaigns in Malaya and the Dutch Indies. the Hawaiian Island of Oahu was home to much of the American Pacific Fleet, along with Marine Bases, Army Bases, and Airforce Bases. during the time of the attack, Japanese Intel believed that many of the American battleships and two Aircraft Carriers would be stationed in Pearl Harbor. seeing as Battleships and Aircraft Carriers are HVTs, the Japanese would need to destroy these targets in order to gain the upperhand in the Pacific. however, when the first wave of Japanese aircraft (90 planes) reached Pearl Harbor, they saw that the two Aircraft Carriers were missing. the valuable battleships were present, though, and were soon destroyed. there was supposed to be three waves of planes attacking Pearl Harbor, but soon after the second wave, Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto called off the third wave, stating (if i remember this right) "I believe we have just woken a sleeping giant."

| Nice try Jarhead, but that´s the wrong answer, more than 6 ships were sunk at Pearl
This Moment in History was actually covered up by the Department of the Navy and the U.S. Government in order not to further demoralize the American People and Military Forces.

| Close but no Cigar, There were 7 ships sunk at Pearl, 4 battleships sunk, 4 damaged 2 destroyers sunk, 1 damaged 1 other ship sunk, 3 damaged ( Civilian ) 1 battleship run aground 3 cruisers damaged
2,345 military and 57 civilians killed, 1,247 military and 35 civilians wounded
and question 4 asks about Hundreds killed, not thousands, The Attack on Pearl is the wrong answer, will give you a hint, It was not a Result of enemy action.
to answer your question,
Airman 1st Class Shigenori Nishikaichi , his plane was so badly damaged that he was not able to make it to the carriers and had to go with the ditching plan, land on or near the island of Niíhau, move to the north beach and await rescue by submarine.

correct. he was captured by several local Hawaiians and questioned by issei Japanese Immigrants. Nishikaichi and the Japanese Immigrants eventually turned on the local Hawaiians and attempted to take back Nishikaichi's papers, which had been apprehended by one of the Hawaiians. during the attempt to obtain the papers, Nishikaichi and the issei took two people hostage, who then killed Nishikaichi by bashing his skull in with a rock. the issei shot himself in the head with a shotgun.

| I'll try #8, a: Trojan horse b: Boats? c: Among other things I believe he made a wood and canvas Army to fool German recon planes into thinking there was a major offensive taking place in southern North Africa(egypt?), when it was actually happening in the north... Plan worked. d: plant Kulicov's rifle in a faux sniper hide.... e: White flags, the enemy thought the normal French army was moving into position too surrender sticks | |

| You got the first 2 correct sticks, nice guess on the Boats ! They were called Q-boats. Q-ships were used in both wars, by all combatants (yes the Germans had them too, as well as the japanese)@ Jarhead, you got the Island correct, but not the exact location, here is a hint, West Loch at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.Current Cookie Count Jarhead-- 1 sticks-- 2 | |

| Well time to answer, 2. Capt. Charles B DeBellevue is credited with six aerial victories during the Vietnam conflict, making him the number one United States Air Force scoring person. Yet there is something unusual about the then Captain DeBelleyue and his victories that make them…well Odd. What makes his victories odd? He was the first non-pilot ace and leading ace of the Vietnam War. He was an F-4 weapon system officer with the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron. 3. This is a 5 part-er for the Navy fans, a. What was the name and number designation of a USN warship that was captured and used by the Japanese navy during WWII? 1-Uss Stewart(DD-224)b. What was her designation when the Japanese navy used her? 2-Patrol Boat #102 or PB-102c. Where did the American authorities finally find her? 3-discovered in Kure/Hiroshima harbourd. What was her final job before her retirement? 4-On 28 October 1945 she was taken over by a US Navy prize crew and on the following day she was officially recommissioned into the United States Navy as the USS DD-224, with no other name although she soon became nicknamed the “USS RAMP”, an acronym for “Recovered Allied Military Personnele. Where is her final resting-place? A general geographical location will do. 5-deep waters off San Francisco Another 5-er for you, and this is going to tweak many members here 4. Question Scenario. It is Sunday, in the Hawaiian Islands. Suddenly, the event happens. Six ships are sunk. Many more are damaged. Hundreds of people are killed, or wounded. a. Where is the event? (I need the exact location). Pearl harbor, Hawaiian Islands, West lochb. When did it happen (The exact date, month and year)? 21 May, 1944. It was a sunday,c. Who did it? (Who perpetrated this evil deed?) Yes it was the US. An accident during the loading of the LSTsd. What sank the ships? Its called a sympathetic detonation. One ship exploded, causing the remaining ships moored to them to detonate too. its all that ammo, fuel, and other things that went boom that was being loaded for the Invasion of Saipan.e. Why did it happen? (Ultimate cause only) At first it was thought that it was sabotage! Then in the end, it was during the loading of individual mortar shell, with the possible dropping of one shell, that caused the whole mess. The Navy in order to prevent morale from being effected back home, hushed up the incident. It wasn't untill recently that the story came out 5. The word `` Decimate ´´ actually has its roots in the Military, but has nothing to do with the opposing military force. a. Where does the word originate ? originated with the roman leigon. If a cohort or legion mutinied, it was decimated b. How was it used and by who Originally ? the soldier standing in the first rank in the first file picked a number from one through ten out of a helmet, and the count off continued from that number. When the count off came to “ten” (decem in Latin), that soldier was executed, as was every tenth man after him; the other nine tenths got the message. c. When was the last time that it was done by a Military Unit, and by Who ? ( 3 Possible answers ) What I was looking for was the last time, ot the latest time decimation had been used by an army as a tool for dicipline. There are actually three instances in WWI that would have satisfied this answer: 1 Battle of the Marne, French Army. General Boutegourd had seven soldiers from the 327th regiment shot on 7 September 1914 without even a preliminary hearing for retreating during the Battle of the Marne. This particular organization had a lot more than seven men run from the battle. It would seem that the general had one individual group picked at random, and arbitrarly had seven of its memebers shot. This is a straight form of decimation, the use of selecting individual soldiers at random and shooting them as an example. It is the one , authoritative documented latest example of this I could find in study. 2. The British Army, 1914-1918: Decimation in the form of trials and sentances carried out. Between 1914 and 1918 the british tried 3000 men for crimes concerning the battlefied. Of the 3000 sentanced to death, 300 or so were actually put to death, the rest commuted in sentances. This is a broad form of decimation, in that one in ten have actually been put to death, although it occurred over a period of time and not confined to just one period on the battlefield. There is a great web site that defines the Shot at Dawn syndrome of the British Army here: http://www.shotatdawn.org.uk/The last case of decimation occured in the french army during the great Mutiny, April 29, 1917. Although not proven, some 30 soldiers (out of a total of 30 to 40,000 mutineers) were shot after the mutinies had been put down. It would appear that the French and Italian armys, which were the last major Military organizations to have a decimation clause allowed in their code of military justice, outlawed the practice after WWI. 6. Now for a real Tough one Bernard Fall wrote his Book "Hell in a very Small Place" about a very famous battle. a. Name the battle. the battle fought for the small stong point Isabelle b. Name the country it was fought in. Vietnam c. Name the two opposing commanders. Giap and Ho Chi Minh, Henri Navarre d. What was the outcome of the battle? Vietnamese won independence from France after 85 years e. Where was the place that was described in the title as "Hell in a very small place"? ( Don´t think Google will help you here ) Dien Bien Phu 7. The `` Battle between the Tiger and the Elephant ´´, is also known as what Famous Battle ? Dien Bien Phu 8. All Military Forces use and have used Deception Plans or Ruses to attempt to get their Enemy to either let down their guard, or to cause them to react to information wrongly, can you answer these 5 Ruses, a. In what is probably history's most famous ruse, the Greeks did what to conquer a city holding a lady whose beauty could launch a 1000 ships? Trojan Horse ( sticks ) b. Q-ships were used in both wars, by all combatants (yes the Germans had them too, as well as the japanese) c. A British "major" by the name of Martin participated in a great ruse against Germany. What did this man do? "Major Martin" was a pneumonia victim that was found (in London, I belive) who was dressed like a Intelligence Officer then taken by submarine just off the coast of Spain and released. In his briefcase, which was chained to his wrist, were "fake" plans for the Allied invasion at Calais. The hope was to direct German attention away from the real landing sites at Normandy. d. Vasilli Zaitsev in the Book Enemy at the Gates supposedly had a sniper duel with a German officer ( its not verified, but it is a great story). IN THE BOOK, what ruse does Vasilli use to get the German Major sniper to reveal his position? ( The movie ruse is not the answer). It was the old fake head in the helment trick. they raised it up, waited for the german to fire, spotted the reflection of his scope under the sheet metal, and fired back. Although its never been proven the duel took place, they supposedly have the germans scope on display with Vasillis rifle e. In the movie made titled Beau Geste, The French Foreign Leigoners in the fort try a desperate ruse to keep the desert invaders from attacking the fort. What ruse do they employ? as each man died, they would put his body, propped up, on the parapret leaning through the appature with the rifle wedged under the arm to look like they were still waiting to shoot something. The remaining survivors would run behind them and simulate them shooting. I guess the berbers weren't really hip to the trick [quote] | |

| In the name of World Peace, I´m going to cut some slack on this one, but only this once !! The National Guard is controlled by State Govoners in times of Peace, the Pentagon has a role but only admitistratavly. State Govonors can activate the Guard in times of Civil Unrest, or State and National Disaster. So to be kind, Cookie Count is Jarhead.....1 djstasavitch.....1 The question for today is...... The Blue Angels, Americas number 1 precision flying team, is part of what Branch of Service ? ( This should be easy ) | |
