Subject: Scope, or Red dot sight? Tue Jan 05, 2010 11:49 pm
Ok, well i have the TSD spring m14 and im looking to make some upgrades. Item # 1, a scope or red dot sight. My concerns is that in order for a scope to fit, it has to be rather large and i've gotta check up on eye relief and all that stuff, but with a red dot sight, it wont really be... sniping

It depends on how accurate your gun is. If there's lots of stray BBs than a magnification scope won't help much. If it's dead on at, say, 100+ ft, it helps. If they stray off at 70 or 80 feet you'll want a red dot. Well that's just the way I personally think.. Also if you are worried about eye relieve you should get an EOTech replica, they have 0 parallax which means you can be to the side of the scope or above it or have your eye as far away from it as necessary and the reticle still points to the same spot.

Many of the replicas do have significant parallax...although, thats what you get for spending $60-80 on a replica of a $200+ item.

personally the best sight you could get is a simple machanical site (such as a V |) In airsoft you wont be shooting far enough to need a scope and with a mech sight you can see the target and wha'ts going on around him

Zane, thats a common argument with RS shooters. Being one myself I also used that argument a lot. However in airsoft there are several things that sometimes need magnification.
1: We can't use a whole lot of bino's because of our goggles. I have found a pair that barely works, but the field of view sucks with my goggles on.
2: We need to trace our shots, to make sure we actually hit them. I cannot tell you the amount of times where I have been looking at someone through a magnified scope and the person next to me swears they shot them, when in fact they are shooting 20ft in front of him.
3: Spotting targets with scopes is invaluable in the field. In RS shooter we almost always have a good background to see the target(white target against sand/treeline etc), even in hunting we usually spot the animal because it moves. However in airsoft we use camo, and most players aren't moving as much as a deer....
Scopes have become invaluable to me, I have opted to go with magnified optics whenever possible on all my rifles(when my budget permits it). My 2c...

From personal expeiance and using the rifle for main weapon it's best to use a red dot site unless it has been upgraded with new tbb, hop up buckings, and spring and spring guide, then i would use a scope, if no upgrades have been added on then i would suggest getting a red dot scope, it will narrow out your targets body and you'll still have the sniper feel.

very good choices scope, i see you took the advice on getting the scope one, it will be much easier to pin point a target for you, also if your going to keep the m14 then do upgrades

I bought it, and it works great. only thing is the dot moves when you move your eye, which makes it slightly difficult to aim, but im hittin soda cans at 50 ft away with 100% accuracy

That's called parallax. It happens with just about any cheaper optics. My red rot is really bad with parallax.

I was aware that its called paralax, and on my red dot scope, its not too bad. Because my stock never moves, my eye can always be generally in the same spot. Oh and btw, my dad had to take apart my whole gun today cuz i got a bb somehow lodged in the spring. We were both amazed when the gun worked after we put it back together

Parallax = bane of all red dots' and scopes' existence. Haha unless you want to buy a genuine EOTech..
Edit: Wow, Sgt Pepper, you are LUCKY. You could have been screwed.

Amen. The parallax isn't all that bad, but it is noticeable. I'm thinking of getting a red dot or holo for my Kimber...but getting a rail on my .45 would cost $200+ from the local gunsmith.

I've always thought optics on handguns looked kind of... well... how should I put this? Retarded. That's just my opinion though

Ya, but when I go to IPSC practical pistol marxcomps...I feel left out cuz all the pro's have optics.
Back when I was doing .22's, I had a red dot...and it was such a beautiful combo.

Hey, whatever works for you. It's all about what works and what doesn't, and for some people, irons on a handgun don't work.
